I made several unsuccessful attempts over the past two years to update the maps on my Roadmate.

Last week I made one last attempt and spoke to someone at Magellan who connected my call to what I concluded was a third party software vendor who told me I needed to buy his software for $200 which would fix what he said was a very serious security flaw in my computer that was blocking me from getting Magellan updates.

I declined and went on line and found other reports of similar referrals. I also found a posting from another Roadmate owner who fixed the problem by going to smartgpseco.com. I went to the website, downloaded a software update and installed it. Then I went back to the website and downloaded and installed the map update.

No fuss, no cost, no scam.

Why couldn't Magellan's rep or their website direct me to smartgpseco.com?

Needless to say, my next GPS will not come from Magellan.

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Monetary Loss: $600.

Preferred solution: Make map software and updates easily accessible on your website..

Do you remember the phone number? This happened to me a few years back; I did not take the bait but the guy was very crude and told me some not nice things a girl can go do.

I too had a Magellan that would not update maps. I was also transferred from Magellan.

Same thing just happened to me. I wrote a detailed comment but it 'disappeared'
